Goodluck Jonathan's public appearances have been rare, and his utilized power has been limited since being appointed acting President for Nigeria. The cabinet was most defiantly seen as an obstacle to Jonathan's efforts to take control. As for replacement ministers, none were immediately named.
Following Wednesday's shakeup, a day of protests in the capital started over issues including infrastructure failings, fuel shortages and power blackouts.
As of last week, Yar'Adua who has shown no public appearances since his return to Nigeria in February, has been called on to resign or be removed from power.
Nigeria has also failed to control outbreaks of violence in it's rural heartland, where "communal strife" left hundreds dead last week. Goodluck Jonathan replaced his national security adviser after details of the slaughter emerged It wasn't clear if the switch was related to the killings.
